Marcasite Silver Earrings
November 5, 2009
Marcasite earrings are silver earrings with small pieces of Pyrite which are a metallic gold in colour. Pyrite and sterling silver make an excellent combination as the contrast between the 2 materials is quite striking as you can see in the image below.
If marcasite earrings are well looked after then they get better with age as they develop a patina layer. Since most marcasite earrings are made with sterling silver (they are at Sterling Silver Dreams) then the normal rules apply when caring for your earrings.
Here are some top tips for caring for your marcasite silver earrings:
- Store your marcasite earrings in an air tight container to help prevent tarnishing.
- Ensure you wrap up your marcasite silver earrings when in a jewellery box with other items of jewellery to prevent the pieces of jewellery rubbing together and scratching each other.
- Don’t leave any type of marcasite jewellery on bare wood as is it contains an acid with affects its surface, this is also true of wood based products such as paper and cardboard.
- Only clean Marcasite silver earrings with mild soap (soap that is pH neutral like Dove) and warm water. Dry and polish to a shine with an anti tarnish cleaning cloth.
- Do not leave your marcasite silver earrings soaking in water and avoid user steamers and ultrasonic jewellery cleaners as this may damage the Pyrite.
If you take care of your marcasite silver earrings you will be rewarded over time with their vintage beauty.

I love Marcasite Jewellery, I have a huge collection of Marcasite earrings and a very pretty Marcasite necklace that my husband bought me for my birthday. Thanks for the tips on how to clean it.
